"Red Dress Syndrome"
Booking is a stressful part of this business. You just can't take rejection personally. I try to have a sense of humor about it. As a female performer I run up against venues that book, what I call, "dudes with guitars" because they are cheap, easy, and they don't threaten the owner's wife/girlfriend or a female booking agent. Men are very good at networking and mutual support. I often wish most women were better. I wish we were lifting each other up at every opportunity and helping each other along. I try to live my life that way. All my doctors are women, and I support women's causes and those that champion them.
I was playing a show once (wearing a red dress) and a woman's husband/boyfriend was enjoying my performance a bit too much for her liking, so she dragged him out. Later that week, she left negative, hateful and untrue feedback (mentioning the red dress) on my Facebook Band page. I private messaged her to see if there was anything I could do to help her or just make her feel better. She was obviously going through some stuff and I was just an easy target for her frustration, that's okay, I suppose that helped her in a way. As you might expect, she didn't receive my olive branch of kindness with sisterly care, but I had to try. NEWSFLASH: Life is hard and we are ALL going through stuff. We are ALL trying to do the best we can. We are ALL working our butts off! I personally am just trying to put some good music in the world and help people forget about the bad stuff for a while. My songs actually resonate with women and our issues, if they stay long enough to hear them. So the red dress is for YOU ladies! It's your freedom from the cares of the day. I so appreciate all my fans, but you ladies...will always be why my soul sings and I am forever in your corner sisters!
